There were some rumblings that maybe David Ross would return to the Cubs dugout as Joe Maddon‘s bench coach, though it all seemed far-fetched. It’s now out of the question entirely after it was announced Tuesday that Ross had reached a multi-year extension as an analyst for ESPN.
However, Ross will remain with the Cubs as a special advisor to the front office, so he’ll still have a role with the team in a limited capacity.

“We have talked to him about being around a little bit more this year in a bit of an expanded role,” Epstein said during the GM Meetings in Carlsbad, CA. “We’ll see how that negotiation goes. Not about money, just getting him around more often.”
As for the idea that he could eventually replace Maddon, the extension all but assures that won’t be happening.
